An essential stationery set for writing and drawing, including paper, brush, ink, and inkstone, is called Munbangsau (文房四友). Among these, byeoru, a tool used for grinding ink, has historically played a role in organizing thoughts and minds at the fingertips of ancestors.

The artistic depth of byeoru is revealed in its form and decoration, engraved with various symbolic patterns such as dragons, cranes, turtles, clouds, lotus flowers, and bamboo. Byeoru is a medium that provides a moment of meditation to face the world, beyond just a physical tool.

Yeonjeok, which forms a pair with byeoru, is a bowl used to hold water for wetting the inkstone. With its small and simple form, yeonjeok, which embodies peaches, lotus flowers, carps, and turtles, can be seen as a miniature art object of Korean ancestors that expresses their aesthetic sensibility and connection with nature.

In today’s fast-paced digital era, why not take a moment to reflect and contemplate, perhaps by imagining our ancestors, who spent time organizing their thoughts in spaces filled with the scent of ink?

느림과 예술의 미학, 벼루[硯]와 연적硯滴

글을 쓰거나 그림을 그릴 때 늘 곁에 두는 종이, 붓, 먹, 벼루를 가리켜 ‘문방사우文房四友’라고 합니다.

이 가운데 ‘벼루’는 먹을 갈기 위한 도구로, 오랜 시간 선조들의 손끝에서 생각과 마음을 가다듬게 하는 역할을 했습니다.

형태나 장식에서도 예술적 깊이를 보여주는 벼루에는 용, 학, 거북, 구름, 연꽃, 대나무 등 여러 상징이 담긴 다양한 문양이 새겨져 있습니다.

벼루는 단순한 물리적 도구를 넘어, 세상과 마주하는 사색의 시간을 열어 주는 매개체였습니다.

벼루와 짝을 이루는 연적은 먹을 가는 데 필요한 물을 담는 그릇입니다.

작고 간결한 형태를 지니면서도 복숭아, 연꽃, 잉어, 거북 등을 형상화한 연적은 자연과 미감을 담아낸 선조들의 작은 예술품이라 할 수 있습니다.

모든 것이 빠르게 흘러가는 디지털 시대를 살아가는 오늘, 먹 향 가득한 공간에서 천천히 생각을 정리하던 선조들의 모습을 떠올리며, 잠시 사유(思惟)의 시간을 가져 보는 것은 어떨까요?
