The Night of Joseon: A Dim Yet Deeper Light

Lamps in Joseon were not merely tools to light up the dark. Jedeung (a lantern with a handle) and chorong (a candle lantern) quietly embraced the light rather than spreading it. The soft glow diffused through paper or silk, filling the space without glare and leaving a warm, lingering impression.

Traditional lighting was more than just for illumination; it was a design tool that delicately adjusted the spatial ambiance. It embodied the philosophy and artistic sense of how to deal with light, along with the refined craftsmanship of Joseon artisans. This is the true ‘aesthetics of light’ and a complete, timeless visual language.

Tradition is not just a thing of the past. It may be a design ahead of its time. It’s time to revisit the “light” and the answer lies here in our traditional lighting.

조선의 등불은 단순히 어둠을 밝히는 도구가 아니었습니다. 제등과 초롱은 빛을 퍼뜨리기보다, 조용히 감싸 안는 방식을 택했죠. 종이나 비단을 통과하며 부드럽게 번지는 빛, 눈부심 없이 공간을 물들이는 구조, 그리고 오래도록 머무는 듯한 따뜻한 여운까지 말입니다.

이처럼 전통 조명은 단순한 조명기구가 아니라, 공간의 감도를 섬세하게 조율하던 디자인 도구였습니다. 그 안에는 빛을 다루는 철학과 미감, 그리고 조선 장인들의 감각이 고스란히 담겨 있죠. 이것이야말로 진정한 ‘빛의 미학’, 그리고 시간이 흘러도 변하지 않는 완성된 조형 언어입니다.

전통은 그저 지나간 과거가 아니라, 오히려 감각을 앞서간 디자인일지도 모릅니다. 우리가 다시 바라봐야 할 ‘빛’, 그 답은 바로 여기 있습니다.
