A Letter with Instructions on How to Use the Healing Talisman for a Sick Child.

Korean Letter (Minsok 32035) is one of over 50 letters exchanged in the early 1900s between a father and his daughter, named Hongjibi, who married into the Hong family. These letters reveal their recent updates and concerns for one another. Health and illness were common topics in their correspondence.

The letter explains how to use the healing talisman for a sick child. The letter reads as follows. “Since the talisman has arrived, I’m sending this in a hurry. At midnight, pour a small cup of water over the talisman, and boil it down to about a tablespoon. As it begins to boil, continuously repeat the word ‘Hoesaengsu(回生壽; restoration to life and longevity)’.

Feed the resulting liquid to the child and keep chanting the word ‘hoesaengsu’ until the child falls asleep. Store the solid remains of the talisman properly, and if the child gets sick again, reboil and use them, Don’t forget to handle it with great care and sincerity. Burn the talisman envelope immediately.”

딸바보 아버지의 지극한 사랑

아이의 병을 낫게 하는 부적 사용법이 적힌 한글 편지

한글 편지(민속32035)는 홍씨 집으로 시집간 딸(홍집이)과 아버지가 주고받은 1900년대 초반 편지 50여 장 가운데 하나로, 편지에는 서로의 근황과 걱정거리 등이 잘 나타났습니다. 그 가운데에서도 건강과 질병에 대한 내용이 많이 보였습니다.

편지의 내용은 병든 아이를 소생하게 하는 부적의 사용법이었습니다. 편지를 풀어보면 “부적이 왔기에 급히 보내니, 한밤중에 이 부적에 물 한 종지를 부어서 한 숟가락이 될 정도로 끓이되, 끓기 시작할 때부터 ‘회생수(回生壽)’라는 말을 자꾸 하거라. 끓여서 아이에게 먹인 후 아이가 잠들 때까지 쉬지 말고 회생수를 부르거라. 부적을 달인 건더기는 바르게 잘 두었다가 아이가 또 부실하거든 다시 삶아서 쓰라고 하니 부디 잊지 말고 정성껏 사용하거라. 부적을 싼 봉투는 즉시 태워버리거라.”

이 편지를 아버지에게 받아서 아픈 아이에게 부적을 달여 먹이며 아이의 병이 하루빨리 낫길 바라는 여인(홍집이)의 모습과 아버지의 애틋한 딸 사랑이 눈에 선합니다.
