A Pair of Bowls on a Table – Where the Journey Begins

Let’s open the red wooden box. What do we find inside? It contains various kinds of tableware: a stainless-steel rice bowl, a kettle, a low bowl, a jaengcheop, and a small dish.

But wait, there are two rice bowls. Perhaps they were meant for two people, most likely a newlywed couple.

Inside the box, the words “Inggo Bansanggi” and “Shinsegae” are printed. It seems that Shinsegae Department Store sold this product targeting newly married couples.

In the 1960s and 1970s, a bansanggi―a set of dinnerware―was considered an essential part of the bridal dowry.

The word “inggo” means “lovebird,” a bird that lives affectionately in pairs.

Preparing a bansanggi for a newly married couple was not merely for practical use. It also carried the heartfelt wish that the couple would live in harmony and affection for many years to come.

In Korean, sikgu literally means “those who eat together”―and by extension, “family.” Two people who once walked separate paths come together in marriage and begin life as one family. Perhaps this journey of becoming sikgu began with nothing more than a pair of bowls.

• Jaengcheop: a side-dish plate used in a bansang (Korean table setting). It is the unit by which the number of dishes on a table is counted. In this context, “side dish” excludes rice, soup, and kimchi.

두 개의 밥그릇, 하나의 식탁 – 거기서 관계는 시작된다.

붉은색 나무 상자를 열면 무엇이 들어 있을까요? 상자 안에는 스테인리스로 만든 밥그릇, 주전자, 대접, 쟁첩*, 종지 등 음식을 담는 여러 종류의 그릇이 담겨 있습니다. 그런데 가만 보니 밥그릇이 두 개입니다. 아마도 두 사람, 신혼부부를 위한 것이 아닐까 합니다.

상자 안쪽에는 ‘잉꼬반상기’, ‘신세계’라는 글자가 인쇄되어 있습니다. 신세계백화점에서 신혼부부를 겨냥해 판매한 상품이었던 듯합니다. 1960~1970년대에는 반상기가 중요한 혼수 품목 중 하나였습니다.

‘잉꼬’는 짝을 지어 다정하게 살아가는 새입니다. 신혼부부의 첫 살림에 반상기를 준비하는 일은 단순한 생활의 필요를 넘어 부부가 오래도록 다정하게 지내기를 바라는 마음이 담긴 행위였을 겁니다.

‘식구’라는 말은 ‘함께 밥을 먹는 사람’이라는 의미가 담겨 있습니다. 각기 다른 길을 걸어온 두 사람이 부부가 되고, 이제 하나의 식구가 되어가는 과정. 그 시작은 아마도 두 개의 밥그릇에서부터였을지도 모릅니다.
