A Sip of Water, A Sip of Hope ― Pyojubak

There is a line in Pansori Danga that goes: “I journey through Cheonli gangsan (a thousand li of mountains and rivers) only with Jukjangmanghye (竹杖芒鞋) and Danpyoja (單瓢子).

The waterfall is truly magnificent ― this must be Mount Yeosan (廬山; one of China’s most famous mountains known for its natural beauty).” Jukjangmanghye refers to a bamboo staff and straw sandals, while danpyoja means a gourd dipper worn at the waist ― a simple depiction of a traveler setting off on a long journey.

The artifact introduced here is a small portable dipper used to scoop and drink water or alcohol. Though its origin is unclear, historical texts refer to it as Pyo (瓢), Pyoja (瓢子), and Dobae (桃杯).

Originally made from a round gourd or a bottle gourd, pyojubak later came to be crafted from wood, stone, paper, and even metal. Many were shaped after peaches and adorned with motifs such as stems, leaves, flowers, turtles, dragons, and cranes ― symbolizing good fortune and longevity.

Even in a small pyojubak, we can see the artisan’s craftsmanship and the aspirations of the people of that era ― Sumyeongjangsu (壽命長壽; longevity) and Bugwiyeonghwa (富貴榮華; wealth and prosperity).

Although the pyojubak has been replaced by water glasses and tumblers over time, the wishes of Korean ancestors ― once carved into its shape and design ― still resonate deeply with us today.

물 한 모금, 소망 한 모금 – 표주박

판소리 단가 가운데 “죽장망혜(竹杖芒鞋) 단표자(單瓢子)로 천리강산 들어가니 폭포도 장히 좋다, 여산(廬山)이 여기로구나.”라는 가사가 있습니다. 죽장망혜는 대지팡이와 짚신을, 단표자는 허리에 찬 표주박을 말하며, 먼 길 가는 나그네의 소박한 차림새를 노래한 것입니다.

여기에 등장하는 표주박은 물이나 술을 떠서 마실 때 사용하는 휴대용 작은 바가지입니다. 언제부터 쓰여왔던 것인지 알 수는 없지만, 문헌에는 표(瓢), 표자(瓢子), 도배(桃杯) 등으로 나타납니다.

원래 둥근 박이나 조롱박으로 만들던 표주박은 오랜 세월 전해져 오는 동안에 나무와 돌 혹은 종이와 금속 등의 다양한 재료를 이용해 제작하기도 하였습니다. 그 형태는 복숭아를 본뜬 것이 많은데, 겉면에 줄기·잎·꽃·거북·용·학 등을 장식해 길상과 장수의 의미를 담기도 했습니다.

작은 표주박 하나에도 이것을 만든 장인의 솜씨와 더불어 수명장수(壽命長壽)·부귀영화(富貴榮華) 등 그것이 만들어졌던 그 시대 사람들의 모든 소망이 담겨져 있습니다.

비록 표주박은 시대를 달리하면서 물컵·텀블러 등으로 대체되고 있지만, 그 형태와 꾸밈에 담긴 옛사람들의 소망은 여전히 우리에게도 소중한 바람으로 다가오고 있습니다.
