Gramophone in the Age of Retro and Analogue

When you hear the word ‘gramophone’, what comes to mind? The first sound reproducing machine was invented by Thomas Edison in 1877. Early versions played music with a needle, but the sound was too quiet. To make it louder, Edison added a horn-shaped tube that spread sound beautifully, and soon, the horn became the defining feature of early gramophones.

Over time, the horn itself became a decorative element. Horns were made in different shapes and materials, sometimes painted with patterns, and paired with elegant stands. Their gorgeous designs caught people’s eyes and even reflected the owners’social status.

As technology improved, the horn moved inside the cabinet. Furniture-style and compact gramophones became popular, and the classic horn type slowly disappeared. Today, you can spot them as vintage ornaments or museum exhibits.

But now, in this age of retro vibes and analogue warmth, the horn gramophone is making a comeback! With vinyl records trending again, don’t you feel reminded of the “modern girls” and “modern boys” who once filled the dance halls a century ago? Maybe it’s time for the horn gramophone to shine once more.

레트로와 아날로그 감성의 시대에 보는 100년 전 축음기 – 나팔형 축음기

여러분은 축음기라는 말을 들으면 무엇이 떠오르시나요? 바늘을 사용해 소리를 재생하는 축음기는 1877년 에디슨이 처음 발명했다고 합니다. 하지만 당시의 축음기는 큰 소리를 내지 못했습니다.

에디슨은 소리를 키우기 위해 나팔 형태의 관을 축음기 외부에 달았고, 나팔형 관은 끝부분이 넓기에 소리가 울려 퍼졌습니다. 나팔은 초기 축음기의 상징이 되었죠.

축음기의 나팔은 장식품이 되기도 했습니다. 축음기 본체에 장식 문양이 새겨지는 것처럼 다양한 형태와 재질의 나팔관이 제작되었고, 나팔관에 그림이 그려지거나 나팔 받침의 장식도 고급스러워졌습니다.

나팔의 화려한 장식은 사람들의 시선을 끌었고, 축음기의 장식은 소유주의 사회적 지위를 나타내기도 했다고 합니다.

하지만 제작 기술이 발달하며 나팔관은 축음기 캐비닛 속으로 들어가기 시작했고, 가구 형태의 축음기와 작은 크기의 축음기가 유행하며 나팔형 축음기는 점차 사라지게 됩니다.

이제 나팔형 축음기는 가정의 고풍스러운 장식물이나 박물관의 전시품으로서 볼 수 있습니다. 그러나 바야흐로 레트로와 아날로그 감성의 시대! 레코드판이 유행하며 나팔형 축음기도 다시 주목받고 있습니다.

나팔형 축음기를 보면 100년 전 댄스홀을 주름잡던 모던걸과 모던보이가 생각나지 않으신가요? 어쩌면 나팔형 축음기가 다시 돌아올지도 모르겠습니다.
