A needle pouch is used to safely store sewing needles, especially short and fine ones. It consists of two parts — the upper cap and the lower body — that fit neatly together. Inside the bottom part, people used to place strands of hair. Hair was easy to find in daily life and absorbed moisture, helping prevent the needles from rusting while also serving as a soft cushion.

This copper-alloy needle pouch (Minsok66161) was used by the donor’s grandmother since her childhood. Born in 1900, she kept it throughout her life, and her grandchild later donated it to the National Folk Museum of Korea in 2011.

Time flowed through her fingertips as she threaded each needle, stitch by stitch. Even after more than a century, the pouch remains in good condition. The museum cherishes the donor’s generosity and continues to preserve this piece of time so that her warm spirit may endure for years to come.

세월이 켜켜이 쌓인 바늘집

바늘집은 바늘을 안전하게 꽂아 보관하는 주머니입니다. 주로 짧고 가는 바늘을 보관하는 데 사용했습니다. 바늘집은 뚜껑 역할을 하는 윗부분과 바늘을 넣는 아랫부분으로 나뉘며, 두 부분이 맞물려 닫히는 형태입니다.

아랫부분 안에는 일상에서 쉽게 구할 수 있는 머리카락을 넣고 바늘을 꽂아 두었는데, 머리카락은 수분을 흡수하는 성질이 있어 바늘이 녹스는 것을 방지하고 바늘방석 역할을 했습니다.

동합금으로 만들어진 이 바늘집(민속66161)은 기증자의 할머니가 어린 시절부터 사용하던 것으로, 1900년생인 할머니의 유품을 손주가 물려받아 2011년 국립민속박물관에 기증했습니다.

한 땀, 한 땀, 바늘에 실을 꿰던 할머니의 손끝에서 세월이 흘렀습니다. 100년이 넘는 세월을 지내온 이 바늘집은 지금도 상태가 양호합니다.

소중한 유물을 기증해 주신 분의 마음을 잊지 않고, 그 뜻이 오래 이어질 수 있도록 박물관은 오늘도 그 따뜻한 시간을 지켜 나갑니다.
