The Talisman Book Filled with Prayers for a Safe Delivery

The journey of new life―from pregnancy to childbirth and breastfeeding―may seem like the most natural thing in the world.

However, in reality, these events are not always as smooth as expected. Today, science and medicine help us navigate these challenges, but in earlier times, people relied on folk knowledge, sincere prayers, and heartfelt faith.

In the past, infertility, difficult labor, and lack of breast milk were regarded as unnatural and ominous conditions that had to be subdued and overcome. So people carried talismans, wishing for pregnancy, a safe delivery, and a healthy child.

The Choebokmangoe(摧伏萬怪) chapter of this talisman book (Bujeokjip) includes talismans to cure infertility(難姙), difficult childbirth(難産), and agalactia(無乳症). Each talisman embodies prayers to dispel fear and hopes for new life to arrive safely in this world. You can feel this heartfelt sincerity at the special exhibition Happy Birthday, opening on December 3.

순산을 바라는 간절한 마음이 깃든 부적집

새 생명이 찾아오고 자라나 세상으로 나아가는 과정, 임신과 출산, 그리고 수유는 너무나 자연스러운 일처럼 느껴집니다.

하지만 이 길이 언제나 평탄한 것은 아닙니다. 오늘날엔 과학과 의학이 그 어려움을 나누지만, 오래전에는 민간 지식과 간절한 마음에서 오는 믿음과 기도가 그 역할을 대신했습니다.

과거에는 임신이 되지 않거나, 아이가 순조롭게 태어나지 않고, 젖이 나오지 않는 상황은 자연스럽지 않은 괴기한(怪) 것이었기에 꺾어서(摧) 굴복시켜야(伏) 할 무수한(萬) 대상에 해당했습니다.

그래서 사람들은 아이가 잘 찾아오길, 임산부가 건강하게 출산을 마치길, 아이가 건강하게 자라길 간절히 바라며 부적을 지녔습니다.

이 부적집에는 최복만괴(摧伏萬怪) 편에 난임(難姙), 난산(難産), 무유증(無乳症)을 극복하기 위한 부적이 담겨있습니다. 한 장, 한 장의 부적들이 모여 만든 부적집에는 두려움을 이겨내려는 기도와 모든 생명이 안전하게 태어나기를 바라는 소망이 담겼습니다.
