The Most Special Instrument in the World

Geomungo is a traditional Korean instrument that Korean ancestors considered the finest in the world. There’s even a saying, Baekakjijang (百樂之丈), which means the music played by geomungo is the best of all. The very fact that people once ranked music and instruments in this way shows how deeply they cherished this instrument.

Geomungo is unique to Korea. Not only in Asia but worldwide, it’s rare to find an instrument with a similar structure, frame, and playing technique. It’s sometimes compared to the Korean Gayageum, the Chinese Qin (琴), the Indian Sitar, and the Western Viola da gamba in appearance, but their differences far outweigh their similarities.

What makes geomungo special is its sound―wriggling like a tiny creature. When the audible, persistent vibrations of a geomungo reach the listener, a new sense of hearing awakens― as if a blind person were seeing for the first time.

Within it, you may suddenly experience the depth of empathy that has transcended generations, and perhaps understand the very reason why geomungo became the cherished instrument of seonbi (Korean Confucian scholars).

세상에서 가장 특별한 악기

옛사람들이 세상에서 가장 멋지다고 생각하던 전통악기가 바로 ‘거문고’입니다. 거문고로 연주하는 음악이 모든 음악 중 으뜸이라는 의미로 ‘백악지장(百樂之丈)’이란 말까지 있습니다.

특정 음악이나 악기의 서열을 대놓고 정하고 있는 것을 보면 옛사람들의 거문고 사랑이 대단했음을 짐작해 볼만합니다.

거문고는 특별합니다. 아시아를 넘어 세계 어디를 둘러보아도 거문고와 유사한 구조, 형상, 연주법을 갖고 있는 악기는 찾아보기 어렵습니다.

외견상 우리 가야금이나 중국의 금(琴)과 비교하기도 하고 구조상 인도의 시타르(Sitar)나 서양의 비올라 다 감바(Viola da gamba)와도 비교할 때가 있지만 이들은 전혀 다른 악기이며 오히려 다른 점이 더 많습니다.

거문고가 특별한 것은 소리 때문입니다. 거문고 소리는 작은 생명체처럼 꿈틀댑니다. 들릴 듯 말 듯 이어지는 이 꿈틀거림이 귀에 들리기 시작하면 이때부터 심 봉사가 개안하듯 새로운 귀가 열립니다.

그 안에서 시대를 넘어 전해진 공감의 깊이와 거문고가 조선시대 선비들의 애장품이 될 수밖에 없었던 이유를 문득 맞닥뜨릴 수도 있을 것 같습니다.
