The Hidden Pocket in Jeogori (Korean Traditional Upper Garment)

The appearance of people wearing hanbok, holding a camera or smartphone in one hand and a bag in the other, visiting Gyeongbokgung Palace, and taking photos to make memories has not changed over the years.

Traditional hanbok did not have space to carry items such as money or handkerchiefs, which led to the development of pockets.

In Korean genre paintings, men are often depicted wearing multiple pockets on their waistbands. With the advent of the modern era, pockets were incorporated into hanbok, mainly in men’s vests and durumagi (traditional Korean overcoats).

Women also began to adopt pockets into their clothing. The Jeogori (Minsok3907), which is elaborately woven with motifs of Sagunja (4 gracious plants) and butterflies, is a classic example.

This elegant upper garment, which emerged during the Japanese colonial period, features a looser and longer fit, departing from the short, narrow jeogori worn in the late Joseon dynasty.

Its pockets are concealed within the inner fabric and only become visible when the garment is unfolded.

Why were pockets added to the clothing? What did people put in their pockets? Why were pockets sewn into lining rather than outer fabric?

Jeogori is an artifact that raises more questions than it answers.

저고리 속에 숨겨진 주머니

한복을 입고 경복궁을 관람하면서 사진을 찍으며 추억을 남기는 사람들은 예나 지금이나 비슷합니다. 한 손에 카메라 또는 핸드폰을 들고 다른 손에는 가방을 들고 있습니다.

한복에는 주머니가 없습니다. 돈이나 손수건 같은 물건을 넣어둘 공간이 없으니 주머니가 발달했습니다. 풍속화에 나온 남성들의 허리춤에는 주렁주렁 주머니가 여러 개 매달려 있습니다. 근대로 접어들면서 한복에도 주머니가 나타납니다. 남성의 조끼, 두루마기에 주로 생겼습니다.

그런데 여성 저고리에도 주머니가 있는 경우를 만날 수 있습니다. 사군자와 나비 문양이 있는 저고리로 일제강점기에 만들어졌습니다. 화려한 무늬의 저고리는 가슴이 보일 정도로 짧고 좁았던 조선 말 저고리보다 품도 넓어지고 길어졌습니다. 그

주머니를 왜 달았을까요? 주머니에 무엇을 담았을까요? 겉감이 아닌 안감에 주머니를 단 이유는 뭘까요?
