A Bundle of Memories in the Corner: The Chamber Pot

These days, most people live in homes with indoor bathrooms, so they can use the toilet whenever they need to.

Only forty or fifty years ago, however, toilet―often called byeonso―were usually located outdoors or in a separate building, and it was not uncommon for several households to share a single toilet.

In such circumstances, the chamber pot (yogang), kept inside the room, was an indispensable vessel for relieving oneself without stepping outside. Until indoor bathrooms and flush toilets became common, chamber pots quietly occupied a corner of the room.

At the National Folk Museum of Korea in Tanhyeon-myeon, Paju, Gyeonggi Province, ceramic chamber pots are kept in Open Storage 9 on the second floor.

For people who have only ever lived in apartments, chamber pots may call to mind the small portable potties used for babies’ toilet training and for weaning them off diapers. By contrast, those who actually used chamber pots in their childhood may find themselves smiling softly at distant memories―remembering how, on bitterly cold winter nights, the chamber pot spared them from a shiver-inducing trip out to the toilet in the dark.

방구석 추억 덩어리, 요강

오늘날 대부분의 사람들은 화장실이 실내에 딸린 주거 공간에서 살고 있습니다.

용변이 급할 경우 화장실을 바로 이용할 수 있습니다.

그러나 40, 50년 전만 해도 ‘변소’라 하여 주로 실외나 집 밖에 화장실이 있었고, 심지어 여러 가구가 하나뿐인 화장실을 함께 사용하기도 했습니다.

이런 상황에서 방 안에 두고 용변을 해결하던 요강[尿缸]은 요긴한 용기였을 것입니다.

화장실이 실내에 설치되고 수세식 변기가 자리하기까지 요강은 방구석을 차지하고 있었습니다.

경기도 파주시 탄현면에 있는 국립민속박물관 개방형 수장고 2층의 9수장고에는 도자기로 만들어진 요강들이 보관되어 있습니다.

아파트에서만 살았던 사람들은 어린 아기들의 배변 연습과 기저귀 떼기 용도인 이동식 소형 변기를 떠올릴 것입니다.

반면에 어린 시절 요강을 사용해 본 적이 있었던 사람들은 아련한 추억 속에서 잔잔한 미소를 머금게 될 것입니다.

추운 겨울밤 뒷골이 송연하고 소름 돋은 채로 변소에 가는 번거로움을 덜어주었던 요강을 떠올리면서…
