A Garment Filled with Warm Wishes for a Baby

Baenaet Jeogori is the first cloth newborn babies wear after birth. This handmade outfit, crafted from soft fabric, features string fastenings to protect the baby’s sensitive skin and long sleeves to prevent young infants from accidentally scratching themselves.

This simple clothing carries multiple meanings. The family poured their hearts into creating this pure white cloth, wishing for the baby’s health, peace, and a long life. White symbolizes new beginnings and innocence, and every hand-sewn stitch reflects deep devotion. The baenaet jeogori was the result of a heartfelt family rite, eagerly awaiting the arrival of a baby.

Even today, the baenaet jeogori remains a symbol of blessing for new life, more than just baby clothing. Before birth, it serves as a thoughtful gift celebrating both mother and child, and after birth, it becomes a precious keepsake that preserves the baby’s first moments.

The special exhibition Happy Birthday, opening today, showcases a collection of heart-warming baby clothes. Visitors can explore various baenaet jeogori, filled with the warm wishes of those waiting for a child, praying for the baby’s health, and celebrating new life.

아기를 향한 따뜻한 마음이 담긴 옷

배냇저고리는 아기가 세상에 태어나 처음 입는 옷입니다. 부드러운 천으로 손바느질해 만들고, 피부를 보호하기 위해 끈으로 여미며, 작은 손톱이 얼굴을 할퀴지 않도록 소매를 길게 늘였습니다.

그런데 이 단순한 옷에는 복합적인 의미가 담겨 있습니다. 가족은 아이의 무병장수와 평안을 바라며, 새하얀 옷감에 정성을 쏟았습니다. 흰색은 새 출발과 순수함을 상징하고, 한 땀 한 땀의 바느질에는 정성이 가득합니다. 배냇저고리는 아이를 기다리는 가족의 마음이 담긴 의례의 결과였습니다.

오늘날에도 배냇저고리는 단순한 유아복을 넘어, 새 생명을 맞이하는 축복의 상징으로 남아 있습니다. 출산 전에는 산모와 아이를 응원하고 축하하는 선물이 되며, 출산 후에는 아이의 첫 순간을 기억하게 하는 소중한 기념품이 됩니다.

오늘 개막하는 특별전 <출산, 모두의 잔치>에서는 이러한 따뜻한 마음이 담긴 배냇저고리를 선보입니다. 아이를 기다리는 마음, 아기의 건강을 기원하는 마음, 출산을 축하하는 마음 등 여러 사람의 따뜻한 마음이 깃든 다양한 배냇저고리를 만나보시기 바랍니다.
