미국 웨스트 버지니아 크리엘 마운드Criel Mound를 발굴했을 때, 고고학자들은 무작위 매장이 아니라 치밀하게 계획된 무언가를 보고 있다는 사실을 깨달았다.

기원전 250년에서 기원전 150년 사이에 만든 이 마운드는 꼭대기 부근에서 두 구 해골을 먼저 발견했다.

하지만 진짜 놀라운 것은 더 깊은 곳에 있었다.

마운드 바닥에서는 마치 의식처럼 펼쳐진 매장 장면이 발견되었다.

중앙에 커다란 해골 하나가 있고, 그 주위로 열 구 해골이 완벽한 바퀴살 모양으로 배치되어 있었는데, 모든 해골 발이 중앙의 인물을 향하고 있었다.

마치 모든 것이 그 중심 인물을 중심으로 돌아가는 듯했다.

When archaeologists opened the Criel Mound in West Virginia, they realized they were looking at something carefully planned, not random burials. The mound, originally built sometime between 250 and 150 B.C., first revealed two skeletons near the top. But the real surprise was deeper down.

At the base, they uncovered a burial scene laid out almost like a ritual display: one large skeleton in the center, with ten others arranged around it in a perfect spoke-like pattern, their feet all pointing toward the figure at the middle, as if everything and everyone revolved around that central person.
