This Roman standard features a motif of Jupiter Dolichenus, a deity whose mystery cult flourished across the Roman Empire in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. Originally a Hittite-Hurrian god of fertility and thunder worshipped in Doliche (in modern-day Turkey), Jupiter Dolichenus was assimilated into Roman religion and became especially popular among the military.

He is typically depicted standing on a bull and holding a double axe and a thunderbolt—attributes clearly reflected in the figures at the base of the standard. The inscription below reads “I.O.M. DOLYCHENO D. POSTUMI CELER DEC. EX AMPI.”, meaning: “To Jupiter Best and Greatest of Doliche, Decimus Postumius Celer dedicated this from his ample means.”
