황소 모습으로 묘사된 아피스Apis 신 소형 조각상이다.

넓은 목걸이를 두르고 어깨에는 날개 달린 풍뎅이 장식을 한다.

등에는 장식 담요가 덮여 있고, 뒷다리에는 날개를 펼친 독수리가 묘사된다.

길이 9.2cm 이 작품은 코끼리 상아가 재료다.

기원전 688년부터 343년까지 이어진 후기 왕조 시대인 제26왕조에서 제30왕조 시대에 제작된 것으로 추정한다.

“한 번에 아피스를 상징하는 황소는 단 한 마리뿐이었으며, 이전 황소가 죽은 후에는 외모를 기준으로 새로운 황소가 선정되었다. 헤로도토스에 따르면, 아피스 황소는 항상 검은색이었고 특정한 무늬가 있었으며, 혀 밑에는 풍뎅이처럼 생긴 혹이 있었고 꼬리털은 두 갈래로 갈라져 있었다.

신화를 보면 아피스 황소가 프타 신에게 임신한 처녀 암소에게서 태어났다고 전해지며, 아피스와 멤피스 신 프타의 연관성은 신성한 황소 생식력을 프타Ptah 신 창조력의 구체적인 표현으로 강조하는 경향이 있었다.”

A statuette of the deity Apis depicted as a striding bull. He wears a broad collar and a winged scarab beetle across the shoulders. A decorated blanket rests on his back, and a vulture with spread wings is shown across his hindquarters. This 9.2-centimeter long work is made of elephant ivory and dates from the 26th to the 30th Dynasty (688-343 BCE) during the Late Period.

“There was only one bull representing Apis at a time and it was chosen after its predecessor’s death by means of its appearance. According to Herodotus, the Apis bull was always black with particular markings… and with a scarab-like hump under its tongue and the hair of its tail being divided into two strands.

Mythologically, it was said that the Apis bull was born of a virgin cow that had been impregnated by the god Ptah, and Apis’ association with [this] Memphite god tended to stress the sacred bull’s procreative power as a concrete expression of the creative power of Ptah.

As chief of the Egyptian bull deities Apis was also closely linked to monarchical ideology where the physical power of the bull was stressed. The king’s power was equated with that of the god, as when the pharaoh strode alongside the Apis bull in the performance of the Sed festival which aimed at the strengthening and rejuvenation of his powers.”
