인도네시아 카와 이젠 화산Kawah Ijen volcano은 마치 푸른 “용암”처럼 보이는 것을 분출하는데, 이는 사실 액체 유황이 타면서 바위 경사면을 따라 흐르는 것으로, 용암류처럼 보이는 현상을 연출한다.

엄밀히 말하면 푸른 용암은 존재하지 않는다.

만약 실제로 녹은 암석이 식으면서 푸른색을 띤다면, 지구 표면의 어떤 온도보다 훨씬 높은 온도가 필요할 것이다.

이 매혹적인 광경은 용암이 식는 것이 아니라 연소 과정이다.

푸른 불꽃은 낮에는 햇빛과 짙은 흰 연기에 가려져 밤에만 볼 수 있다.

지역 광부들은 불꽃이 사그라든 후 젖은 천 조각 하나만 걸친 채 유독 가스를 뚫고 “악마의 금Devil’s Gold”이라 불리는 노란색 고체 유황을 채굴한다.

Indonesia’s Kawah Ijen volcano produces what looks like blue “lava” that’s actually burning liquid sulfur flowing down rocky slopes, mimicking lava streams.

Technically speaking, blue lava doesn’t exist. If it were actual molten rock cooling to blue, it would require temperatures far higher than anything on Earth’s surface.

This mesmerizing display is combustion, not cooling lava. Blue flames are only visible at night because sunlight and thick white smoke obscure them during the day.

Local miners brave toxic fumes with little more than damp cloths to harvest solid yellow sulfur, called “Devil’s Gold,” after the flames die down.
