수수께끼처럼 큰 로마 신발, 곧 공개 전시 예정

고고학자들이 영국 노섬벌랜드 마그나 로마 요새에서 유난히 큰 로마 신발을 발굴했으며, 그중 일부는 곧 일반에 공개될 예정이다.

2025년에 총 34켤레 신발이 발굴되었는데, 그중 8켤레는 길이가 최소 30cm에 달해 영국 사이즈 13~14에 해당한다.

이에 비해 인근 빈돌란다에서는 지난 55년간 이처럼 큰 신발이 4~5켤레밖에 발견되지 않았다.

이 가죽 신발은 키가 특히 큰 병사들 소유였을 것으로 추정되지만, 왜 이들이 이 요새에 배치되었는지는 여전히 미스터리다.

고고학자들은 활쏘기나 승마와 같은 특수 기술을 지닌 병사들로 구성된 부대가 키가 큰 병사들을 선호했을 가능성이 있다고 추측한다.

발굴된 신발 중 일부는 2월 7일부터 컴브리아주 브램턴에 있는 로마군 박물관에 전시될 예정이다.

향후 발굴 작업을 통해 이례적으로 키가 큰 로마 병사들의 삶과 소속 부대에 대해 더 많은 정보를 밝혀낼 수 있는 제단, 묘비, 문화 유물들이 발견되기를 기대한다.

MYSTERIOUSLY LARGE ROMAN SHOES TO GO ON DISPLAY
Archaeologists have uncovered unusually large Roman shoes at Magna Roman Fort in Northumberland, and some will soon be on public display. In 2025, a total of 34 shoes were excavated, eight of which measured at least 30cm, equivalent to a UK size 13 to 14. By comparison, only four or five shoes this large have been found over 55 years at nearby Vindolanda.

The leather shoes suggest they belonged to particularly tall soldiers, though why these individuals were stationed at the fort remains a mystery. Archaeologists believe specialist regiments, recruited for skills such as archery or horse riding, may have favoured taller recruits.

Some of the shoes will be exhibited at the Roman Army Museum in Brampton, Cumbria, from 7 February. Future excavations hope to uncover altars, tombstones, and cultural objects that could reveal more about the lives and units of these unusually tall Roman soldiers.
