The Gaze of an Outsider

In the 1930s, Japan produced Joseon folk dolls as popular souvenirs for Joseon tourism. These “local toys” were typically crafted from wood or clay. The National Folk Museum of Korea holds a Joseon wooden doll set produced by the Joseon Industrial Association. The set, housed in a wooden box, contains eight dolls: a jangseung (totem pole), a yangban (nobleman), a gisaeng (female entertainer), a jigekkun (porter), a woman carrying a water jar on her head, a man playing the drum, a dancing man, and a female wearing jangot (female’s head covering in traditional Korean costume).

The attached brochure indicates that the set originally included eleven dolls, but three―a bachelor, a little girl, and daeboksin (大福神; a god of fortune)―seem to be missing. In addition, the back of the box reads, “1934, a souvenir from Joseon by older brother”, suggesting it was purchased as a gift for a young sibling. During this period, the demand for group tours from Manchuria to Japan via Joseon skyrocketed as Korea’s railways developed. Observing Joseon culture from an external perspective is both bittersweet and intriguing.

어느 타자의 시선

조선풍속인형은 1930년대에 일본에서 조선 관광상품으로 만들어져 유행했던 인형입니다. ‘향토완구’의 일종으로 주로 나무나 흙을 재료로 만들어졌는데, 국립민속박물관에서는 조선물산상회에서 만든 나무 재질의 조선풍속인형세트를 소장하고 있습니다. 나무 상자 안에는 장승, 양반, 기생, 지게꾼, 물동이를 인 여자, 장구 치는 남자, 춤을 추는 남자, 장옷을 쓰고 있는 여자를 형상화한 인형 8개가 들어 있습니다.

나무 상자 안에 들어있는 설명서를 읽어보니 총 11개의 인형에 대한 소개가 있었습니다. 다른 인형들과 함께 남아있지는 않지만, 총각, 기지배, 대복신(大福神)의 3개 인형이 원래 구성으로 들어있었나 봅니다. 또한 상자의 뒷면에는 ‘1934년, 형이 주는 조선 선물’이라는 글씨가 적혀있습니다.

아마도 형이 조선 관광 기념으로 아우에게 주는 선물로 추정됩니다. 당시 한국은 철도의 발달과 함께 만주에서 조선을 거친 단체 관광 여행이 성행하던 시절이었습니다.

타자의 시선으로 바라본 조선의 문화, 씁쓸하면서도 흥미롭습니다.
