My Grandfather’s Clock: The Tall Clock on the Wooden Floor

There is a song that moves me unexpectedly when the cold wind blows.
“My grandfather’s clock was too large for the shelf, so it stood ninety years on the floor; It was taller by half than the old man himself, though it weighed not a pennyweight more. It was bought on the morn of the day that he was born, and was always his treasure and pride. But it stopp’d short, never to go again, when the old man died…”

My Grandfather’s Clock＊ is a children’s song included in school textbooks. I never met my grandfather as he passed away when my father was a child. Yet a sudden, unexplainable longing for my grandfather rushes over me when I listen to this song.

The sense of longing resurfaced as I was reviewing items donated in 2019 for the 2020 Exhibition of Donated Collections, Sharing Memories. I discovered a wall clock that deeply moved me. Purchased by the donor Seo Chunsik’s great-grandfather Seo Juyong, it had been passed down through generations.

Perhaps I saw the image of my late grandfather in this old wall clock. I contacted Mr. Seo for more information. He explained that the wall clock had always hung on the wall of the maru (wooden main hall) of his family home in Janggi-myeon, Gonju-gun, Chungcheongnam-do. In the 1950s and 60s, owning a clock in the home was a sign of wealth.

Villagers would come to his house one after another just to check the time. Looking at this old wall clock, I imagine the old house filled the presence of Seo Chunsik as a child, his great-grandfather, and their neighbors.

The clock has stopped, but my heart keeps ticking.

길고 커다란 마루 위 시계,
우리 할아버지 시계

찬 바람이 불면 괜스레 마음을 울컥하게 하는 노래가 있습니다.

“길고 커다란 마루 위 시계는 우리 할아버지 시계 / 구십 년 전에 할아버지 태어나던 날 아침에 받은 시계란다. / 언제나 정답게 흔들어주던 시계, 할아버지의 옛날 시계 / 이제는 더 가질 않네. 가지를 않네~ (중략)”

교과서에도 소개된 ‘할아버지 시계’*라는 동요입니다. 저는 할아버지 얼굴을 한 번도 본 적이 없습니다. 그래도 이 노래를 들으면 할아버지에 대한 알 수 없는 그리움이 밀려옵니다.

2020년 기증 자료전 <기억의 공유> 준비를 위해 2019년 기증품을 살펴보던 중 한 벽시계를 보고, 제 마음은 그만 무너졌습니다. 바로 기증자 서춘식 님의 증조할아버지(故 서주영 님)께서 구입하고 대물림해 사용하던 벽시계를 보고 말입니다.

그 낡은 벽시계에서 저의 할아버지를 보았을까요? 서춘식 님께 전화를 걸었습니다. 벽시계는 충남 공주군 장기면, 서춘식 님의 고향집 마루 위에 늘 걸려 있었다고 합니다. 1950년~1960년대에 집에 시계가 있는 것만으로도 부잣집으로 여겨지던 때, 마을 사람들은 시간을 보기 위해 고향집에 줄기차게 찾아왔다고 하네요. 벽시계를 보면서 어린 서춘식 님과 증조할아버지, 그리고 시계를 보러 온 사람들로 북적이던 그 고향집을 상상해 봅니다.

시계는 멈추었는데 마음은 멈추지 않습니다.

*할아버지 시계: 영국의 실화를 바탕으로 1876년 미국 작곡가 헨리 클레이 워크(Henry Clay Work, 1832-1884)가 만들었고 발표 후 여러 나라에서 번역되고 리메이크됨.
