The Transfer of Joseonminsok from The Library to Storage

Joseonminsok (朝鮮民俗; Korean Folk-lore)* is an academic journal published by the Korean Folk-lore Society (朝鮮民俗學會), Korea’s first folklore society. Issued during the difficult times of the Japanese occupation, it released only three issues. Despite its brief run, it is a symbolic journal that has had a significant impact on the development of modern Korean folklore studies.

The National Folk Museum of Korea’s library, or “reference room,” housed Joseonminsok Issues 1-3 for many years. Since these journals were accessible to anyone, their preservation suffered. In 2022, they were finally transferred to storage under optimal preservation conditions. The Special Exhibition Folklore Is Our Lives prompted this decision.

While preparing for the exhibition, the museum attempted to obtain original copies of Joseonminsok from various sources; however, these efforts proved unsuccessful, so the copies available in the library were displayed instead. Several folklorists who viewed the exhibit asked, “How did you get the original journal?”

These episodes helped raise awareness of the journal’s rarity and academic value. As a result, Joseonminsok was formally recognized as an artifact and transferred from the library to storage.

This case shows that materials overlooked today may be rediscovered in the future. Valuable items may still be nearby, awaiting recognition and proper appreciation. Take a moment to look around; searching for such treasures may bring unexpected fulfillment and joy.

『조선민속』, 도서관에서 수장고로 가기까지

『조선민속(朝鮮民俗)』*은 우리나라 최초의 민속학회인 조선민속학회(朝鮮民俗學會)가 발간한 학술지입니다. 일제강점기라는 어려운 시대적 상황 속에서 제3호를 끝으로 더 이상 이어지지 못했지만, 근대 학문으로서 한국 민속학의 출발점을 이야기할 때 늘 언급하는 상징적인 책입니다.

국립민속박물관에 있는 도서관, ‘자료실’이라고 불리는 이곳에서는 오래전부터 『조선민속』 제1호~3호를 소장하고 있었습니다. 덕분에 『조선민속』은 누구나 자유롭게 열람할 수 있었으나, 그만큼 보존 상태가 좋지 않았습니다. 2022년에 이르러서야 『조선민속』은 최적의 보존 환경을 갖춘 수장고로 자리를 옮길 수 있었습니다.

그 결정적인 계기는 「민속이란 삶이다」 특별전이었습니다. 당시 박물관에서는 전시를 준비하며 『조선민속』 원본을 확보하고자 여러 경로로 수소문했지만 끝내 구하지 못했고, 어쩔 수 없이 도서관에 있던 책을 전시에 활용했습니다.

또한 전시장에서 『조선민속』을 본 여러 민속 연구자는 “원본을 어떻게 구했느냐?”라고 물어오기도 했습니다. 이런 일화들은 『조선민속』의 희소성과 학술 가치를 주변에 알리는 데에 큰 도움을 주었고, 그에 힘입어 『조선민속』은 유물로서의 가치를 인정받아 결국에는 도서관에서 수장고로 보금자리를 옮길 수 있었습니다.

이처럼 당대에 충분한 주목을 받지 못하더라도, 시간이 흐르면서 새롭게 조명받는 자료가 있기도 합니다. 우리 주변에는 아직 모습을 드러내지 않았거나 제대로 평가받지 못한 자료들이 남아 있을지 모릅니다. 주위를 돌아보며 그런 자료를 찾아보는 일은 생각보다 큰 보람과 즐거움을 안겨줄 수도 있습니다.
