The dense clusters along the Pacific Rim, the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, and the Alpine–Himalayan belt trace the boundaries of tectonic plates. These are the zones where plates collide, separate, or slide past one another, releasing accumulated stress as earthquakes. In contrast, the quieter interiors of continents reflect older, more stable crust where seismic activity is less frequent but not entirely absent.

Most of the earthquakes shown here were small and unnoticed by people on the surface. Modern instruments can detect events with magnitudes well below the threshold of human perception, including thousands of microquakes each year. Large, destructive earthquakes make up only a tiny fraction of the total seismic record, though they dominate public attention.

Seen as a whole, the map highlights how constant and global seismic activity truly is. Earthquakes are not anomalies but a fundamental expression of plate tectonics, reshaping the planet incrementally and reminding us that the ground beneath our feet is never completely still.
