Meet this jade horse from the Western Zhou Dynasty (c.11th century-771 BC).

Carved from green jade with a yellow tone, it stands calmly with front legs straight and hind legs slightly bent, full of restrained energy.

Its head is lowered, as if lost in thought. Fine double incised lines trace its muscles with remarkable accuracy and balance.

Unearthed in 1993 from the Jin Marquis Cemetery in Quwo county, Shanxi province, this jade horse is now housed at the Shanxi Museum. (from China Museums)

서주 시대(기원전 11세기~771년) 옥말

황록색을 띤 녹색 옥으로 조각한 이 옥말은 앞다리를 쭉 뻗고 뒷다리를 살짝 굽힌 채 차분하게 서 있으며, 절제된 기품이 있다.

머리는 숙여 마치 생각에 잠긴 듯하다.

섬세한 이중선은 근육 윤곽을 놀라운 정확성과 균형감으로 표현한다.
