Emperor Qianlong’s reign (1736-1795) marked the zenith of the Qing dynasty, a period of immense territorial expansion and cultural flourishing. A formidable military strategist, astute politician and prolific writer, Qianlong was also one of history’s most avid art collectors. His passion for the arts and his ambition to project an image of imperial grandeur fuelled an unique artistic legacy that masterfully blended Chinese tradition with European influences. As a dedicated patron, he amassed a colossal collection and oversaw vibrant imperial workshops producing exquisite works.

It was in this environment that the Italian Jesuit painter Giuseppe Castiglione found his place, becoming the emperor’s principal court painter. A key figure in shaping the era’s aesthetic, Castiglione was uniquely able to satisfy the emperor’s desire for both realistic portraiture and symbolic grandeur. This fusion of Eastern and Western artistic traditions is remarkably evident in his masterpiece, “Emperor Qianlong Reviewing Troops”.

The massive hanging scroll, rendered in vibrant colour on silk, depicts the emperor on horseback, clad in armour and exuding an aura of calm authority and military prowess. The painting stands as a testament to the dynamic fusion between a visionary emperor and a gifted foreign artist, perfectly embodying the splendour of the Qianlong era.

건륭제乾隆帝Emperor Qianlong 재위 기간(1736~1795) 청나라는 전성기였으며, 영토 확장과 문화적 번영이 극에 달했던 시기였다. [정반대 이야기도 많다. 이때 이미 청은 내리막길을 걸었다는 말이 심심찮다.]

뛰어난 군사 전략가이자 예리한 정치가, 그리고 다작 작가였던 건륭제는 역사상 가장 열렬한 예술품 수집가 중 한 명이기도 했다.

예술에 대한 그의 열정과 황실의 위엄을 과시하고자 하는 열망은 중국 전통과 유럽의 영향을 절묘하게 조화한 독특한 예술적 유산을 남겼다.

헌신적인 후원자로서 그는 방대한 예술품을 수집했고, 황실 공방을 운영하며 정교한 작품들을 제작토록 했다.

이러한 환경에서 이탈리아 예수회Jesuit 소속 화가 주세페 카스틸리오네Giuseppe Castiglione는 황제의 수석 궁정 화가로 자리매김하게 되었다. [중국명 랑세녕郎世宁이다.]

당대의 미학을 형성하는 데 중요한 역할을 한 카스틸리오네는 사실적인 초상화와 상징적인 웅장함을 동시에 추구하는 황제의 열망을 충족할 독보적인 능력을 지녔다.

동서양 예술 전통의 융합은 그의 걸작인 이 “건륭제 사열Emperor Qianlong Reviewing Troops”에서 뚜렷하게 드러난다.

비단에 생생한 색채로 그린 이 거대한 족자hanging scroll는 갑옷을 입고 말을 탄 건륭제가 차분한 권위와 군사적 기량을 뽐내는 모습을 묘사한다.
