7th-century Anglo Saxon Canterbury Pendant

A fine example of an Anglo Saxon pendant made from a gold disc inlaid with garnets and glass. The empty central spaces would have been filled with white paste to form a cross. It was found just west of Canterbury City Walls at Cranmer House, formerly Westgate Court farm in 1982 by Canterbury Archaeological Trust.

Such finely crafted jewellery would have been made for a wealthy or noble lady. It was probably buried decades after being made as there is evidence of wear and alteration to the pendant. This shows that it was a cherished piece, much used before being buried with its owner perhaps about AD650.

앵글로색슨 시대 캔터베리 펜던트Canterbury Pendant – 7세기.

석류석garnets과 유리로 상감해inlaid 금 원반gold disc으로 만든 앵글로색슨 시대 훌륭한 펜던트다.

중앙 빈 공간은 흰색 페이스트white paste로 채워 십자가 모양을 이루었을 것으로 추정한다.

이 펜던트는 1982년 캔터베리 고고학 재단Canterbury Archaeological Trust이 캔터베리 성벽Canterbury City Walls 바로 서쪽에 있는 크랜머 하우스Cranmer House (옛 웨스트게이트 코트 농장Westgate Court farm)에서 발견했다.

이처럼 정교하게 제작한 장신구는 부유하거나 귀족 여성을 위해 만들었을 것으로 보인다.

펜던트에 마모와 변형 흔적이 있는 것으로 보아 제작된 후 수십 년 뒤에 묻었을 가능성을 높인다.

이는 이 펜던트가 매우 소중히 여겨졌으며, 주인과 함께 묻히기 전까지 오랫동안 사용되었음을 보여준다.

아마도 서기 650년경에 주인과 함께 묻혔을 것으로 보인다.
