This bowl is an example of the Japanese practice of kintsugi – a method of repairing broken ceramics using lacquer mixed with powdered gold.
Kintsugi literally means ‘joining together with gold’. The philosophy behind this practice is that breakage and repair are important parts of an object’s story, rather than something to be hidden.
While the practice is most commonly associated with Japanese craftsmanship, it was also used in Korea, China and Vietnam.

이 그릇은 금가루를 섞은 옻칠을 사용해 깨진 도자기를 수리하는 일본의 킨츠기金継ぎ[현행 외래어 표기법으로는 긴쓰기가 아닌가 한다.] 기법을 보여주는 예다.

킨츠기는 문자 그대로 ‘금으로 붙인다’는 뜻이다.

이 기법의 철학은 깨짐과 수리가 숨겨야 할 것이 아니라 사물의 이야기에 중요한 부분이라는 것이다.

킨츠기는 주로 일본 공예와 연관되지만 한국, 중국, 베트남에서도 사용되었다.
