What’s the face of Cupid (?) doing on a piece of horse gear?

Well, this is a Roman ‘phalera’ (a sculpted disc). These were prestigious fittings used by the Roman army – worn as distinguished service medals on armour, mounted on a unit’s standards, or ornately decorating cavalry harness with auspicious symbols, like this example.

Ours was recovered at Kingsholm, Gloucester, just outside the defences of the early Roman legionary fortress. It was part of an astounding assemblage of early Roman artefacts, including brooches, bracelets, finger rings and more than 150 Roman coins.

이것은 로마 시대 ‘팔레라phalera'(조각된 원반)다.

팔레라는 로마 군대에서 사용한 위엄 있는 장식품으로, 갑옷에 훈장처럼 달거나, 부대 깃발에 부착하거나, 기병의 마구를 상서로운 상징으로 장식하는 데 사용했다.

바로 이 팔레라처럼 말이다.

이 팔레라는 영국 글로스터의 킹스홀름Kingsholm, 초기 로마 군단 요새 방어 시설 바로 바깥에서 발굴되었다.

브로치, 팔찌, 반지, 그리고 150개가 넘는 로마 동전을 포함한 놀라운 초기 로마 유물들과 함께 출토되었다.
