East Iranic daggers – akīnaka

The akinakes were a type of dagger or short sword predominantly used by eastern Iranic tribes like the Scythians, Sarmatians & Sogdians during the first millennium BCE up to the 7th century AD.

These weapons later gained popularity among the Persians and Medes due to their effectiveness.

Scythian akinakes were distinctively shaped, often resembling a heart, kidney, or bollocks, with early versions featuring well-defined bollocks and furrowed handles. Sarmatian akinakes, on the other hand, lacked bollocks & were characterized by a ring-pommel dagger design.

The akinakes used by the Sakas and Kushans in Northern Afghanistan bore resemblance to the Sarmatian type while maintaining their unique design elements, setting them apart from the akinakes used in the steppes region.

In Sogdian Buddhist texts translated from Chinese, the form kyn’k , kīne) is attested twice, corresponding in meaning to “sword” in the Chinese original, without any specifics about the form of the weapon (TSP 6:7, p. 202; Vim. 136).

The variant (’k)[yn]’k, with the initial ’-, may represent an archaic Sogdian form, though one must consider the irregularity of Sogdian orthography and the frequent alternations between initial ’k- and k-.

동부 이란계 단검 – 아키나카

아키나카akinakes는 기원전 1천년부터 서기 7세기까지 스키타이족Scythians, 사르마티아족Sarmatians, 소그드족Sogdians과 같은 동부 이란계 부족들이 주로 사용한 단검 일종이다.

이 무기는 그 효과 덕분에 이후 페르시아인과 메디아인들Medes 사이에서 인기를 얻었다.

스키타이족의 아키나카는 독특한 모양을 하는데 종종 심장, 신장 또는 고환을 닮았으며, 초기 형태는 고환 모양이 뚜렷하고 손잡이에 홈이 파인 점이 특징이다.

반면 사르마티아족 아키나카는 고환 모양이 없고 고리 모양 손잡이 끝 장식이 있는 단검 디자인이 특징이다.

북부 아프가니스탄 사카족Sakas과 쿠샨족Kushans이 사용한 아키나카는 사르마티아형과 유사하면서도 고유한 디자인 요소를 유지하여 스텝 지역에서 사용된 아키나카와는 구별되는 특징을 보인다.

중국에서 번역된 소그드어 불교 경전에서 kyn’k(kīne) 형태는 두 번 나타나는데, 이는 중국어 원문에서 “검”을 의미하며 무기 형태에 대한 구체적인 언급은 없다(TSP 6:7, p. 202; Vim. 136).

초성 ‘-‘가 붙은 변형 (‘k)[yn]’k는 고대 소그드어 형태를 나타낼 수 있지만, 소그드어 표기법의 불규칙성과 초성 ‘k-‘와 ‘k-‘의 빈번한 교체를 고려해야 한다.
