허공에 기대어 선 이, 그대에게 보내는 편지

상설전시관 3 한국인의 일생, 족보와 분재기, 가훈 사이에 당신의 책 『규합총서』가 다소곳이 자리하고 있습니다.

전시품 설명에는 “1809년 빙허각 이씨((憑虛閣 李氏, 1759~1824)가 가정 살림에 관한 내용을 엮어 필사한 책이다. 가정에서 여인들이 알아야 할 항목들이 기록되어 있어 살림에 대한 지혜와 슬기를 배울 수 있다.”라고 적혀 있습니다.

처음 관심을 가지게 된 것은 조선시대 수많은 문집 중 드물게 한글로 쓰였고 저자가 여성이라는 점 때문이었습니다.

어렸을 때부터 영특하기로 집안의 자랑이었다지요. 외숙모가 『태교신기』의 사주당 이씨, 사촌이 『언문지』의 유희, 그리고 당신이 직접 가르쳤다는 시동생 서유구가 『임원경제지』를 지었지요.

그런 집안 분위기 속에서 자라난 당신은 아마도 당대 최고의 지식을 마음껏 흡수한 ‘18세기 알파걸’이었을 것입니다.

하지만 당신은 그 지식을 한문이 아닌 한글로, 학문이 아닌 살아 있는 일상 이야기로 기록했습니다.

빙허각(憑虛閣), 허공에 기대어 선 집이라는 그대의 당호처럼, 누구에게 기대기보다 스스로 나아가려는 태도가 느껴집니다.

당신이 남긴 작은 책 한 권이 많은 질문과 이야기를 던지고 있습니다.

Dear One Who Stands Leaning on the Void

In Permanent Exhibition Hall 3, your book Gyuhapchongseo is quietly placed among genealogy books, property records and family mottos. Its label states, “A manuscript compiled and transcribed by Lady Lee Bingheogak (1759–1824) in 1809. It contains practical household knowledge that women were expected to know, offering guidance and insight for everyday life.”

Your book first drew my attention because it was written by a woman and in Hangeul, which was rare in the Joseon dynasty. It is no surprise that your cleverness made you the pride of your family from an early age. And you grew up among distinguished relatives—your aunt, Lady Lee Sajudang, wrote Taegyosingi; your cousin, Yu Hui, wrote Eonmunji; and your brother-in-law Seo Yugu—whom you once taught—later compiled Imwon Gyeongjeji. Growing up in such an environment, absorbing the finest knowledge of your era, you must have been the “eighteenth-century alpha woman”. It is notable that you chose to write not in classical Chinese but in Hangeul—and not in abstract scholarly discourse but in the vocabulary of daily life.

Just like your pen name (dangho), Bingheogak, “a pavilion leaning on the void,” I sense your will to move forward on your own. Your small book leaves us with many questions and stories. What thoughts guided you as you wrote? What did your days look like? What weight did womanhood carry in your time? Perhaps it is the time for us to listen more closely to the stories your book shares.
