Roman oil lamp featuring Odysseus and the Sirens. The lamp bears on the back the signature SAECVL of an Italian workshop that was very active in the years AD 175-225.

This lamp, with a long beak and a vertical handle, is decorated with a very finely detailed medallion depicting the scene of Odysseus/Ulysses charmed by the Sirens: the hero, recognisable by his cap and tunic, is attached, from the front, to the ship’s pole, led by rowers and a pilot.

In the background, on the rocky and wooded coast, the Sirens, with the wings and feet of birds, play one of the lyre, the second of the syrinx, the third of the double flute.

한데 특이한 점이 있다.

저에 표현된 문양은 오디세우스와 사이렌을 모티브로 삼는다.

등잔 뒷면에는 서기 175년에서 225년 사이에 활발하게 활동한 이탈리아 공방 SAECVL이라는 서명이 있다.

긴 주둥이와 세로 손잡이가 있는 이 등잔은 오디세우스(영어 율리시스)가 사이렌의 유혹에 빠지는 장면을 정교하게 묘사한 메달리온으로 장식한다.

모자와 튜닉을 입은 영웅 오디세우스는 앞에서 돛대에 매달려 있고, 노 젓는 사람들과 항해사가 그를 이끌고 있다.

배경 바위투성이 숲이 우거진 해안에는 새 날개와 발을 한 사이렌들이 각각 리라, 시링크스, 겹피리를 연주 중이다.
