It features a dung beetle, or scarab, representing the sun god Khepri’s ability to create, protect and resurrect. Amulets in this shape were usually hidden within the layers of linen wrapping the mummy, but were sometimes also woven into this kind of net and then placed over the wrapped mummy face.
Dung beetles are laborious animals who use manure for food and breeding, forming a ball which they roll over great distances before burying it in the ground. Males and females work together to form, roll and bury the dung ball, into which the female sometimes lays a single egg, thus securing the hatching’s food and protection until its emergence as an adult beetle.
Other balls are used as part of a mating ritual, consumed by the couple after burial, or simply as a stored meal to be eaten later. The balls are much bigger than the insects, who have been proven to pull an astonishing 1,141 times their own body weight and are thus considered the strongest animals in the world.
The Egyptians watched these activities and imagined the scarab to be Khepri rolling the sun across the sky, burying it at night and bringing it back to life each morning. Seeing that a baby scarab sometimes emerged from the ball, they made the scarab into a symbol of rebirth.
