즐거움을 자아내는 우리의 멋 ‘나전’

국립민속박물관 소장 나전칠함은 1982년 문화재관리국의 이관품으로 故 이성운 장인(1933~2017)의 전승 칠공예 작품입니다. 故 최순우 전 국립중앙박물관장이 “왜색에 물들지 않고 가장 한국적인 멋을 간직한 나전 칠예작품”으로 극찬했던 소중한 작품입니다.

크기는 가로 45, 세로 26, 높이 25.5 센티미터(cm)로, 귀중품을 보관할 용도로 만들어진 전통적인 나전칠함입니다. 천판(天板)에는 쌍학문을 배치하고 양 측면에는 소나무, 대나무, 연꽃, 국화문을 전통 기법에 현대적인 감각을 더해 대담하게 표현한 작품입니다.

고 이성운 선생은 통영 출신으로 한국 전통 나전의 특징을 되살리는 한편, 가장 ‘회화적인’ 작품으로 세간의 주목을 받았습니다. 사라진 전통 나전의 끊음질, 줄음질의 맥을 이으며 현대적 감각과 옻칠의 우수성을 연구해 전통을 재발견하고자 한 걸작입니다. 별 야심이 없이 다루어진 무늬들을 보고 있으면 넉넉하면서도 자연스러움이 한 가닥의 즐거움을 자아내는 멋을 간직한 작품입니다.

Korean Beauty that Brings Joy : Najeon (mother-of-pearl inlay)

The Najeonchilham (lacquered box with mother-of-pearl) in the collection of the National Folk Museum of Korea, transferred from the Bureau of Cultural Property in 1982, is a traditional lacquer craft of the late master artisan Lee Sungwoon (1933-2017). The late Choi Sunwoo, the former director of the National Museum of Korea, praised this artifact as “The most Korean-style piece of mother-of-pearl lacquerware, untouched by Japanese influence.”

Measuring 45 cm long, 26 cm wide, and 25.5 cm high, this lacquered box is designed to hold valuables. Boldly inlaid with traditional mother-of-pearl technique blended with modern sensibilities, it features a pair of crane design on the door panels and a pine tree, bamboo, lotus, chrysanthemum design on the side panel.

The late Lee Sungwoon, born in Tongyeong, revived the characteristics of traditional Korean najeon and gained public attention for his highly ‘painterly’ works. This masterpiece sought to rediscover tradition by studying modern sensibilities and the excellence of lacquer, while also preserving the forgotten traditional techniques like kkeuneumjil (cutting in strips) and jureumjil (filing). Its generously and edudffortlessly arranged patterns, free from pretension, convey a quiet yet genuine joy.
